Bittersweet Symphony, The Verve

So I am not one to pick favorites when it comes to anything. Movies, books, songs, or anything really. But, I do have to say, that if someone asked me, gun to my head what my favorite song in the entire world and galaxy, I would have to pick Bittersweet Symphony by the Verve. The slow, intense beat alone will hook you instantly. It's like a song I have never heard before. The music for it is so simply that it makes it that much more beautiful. For me I'm not about all the big guitar riffs and crazy drum solos, don't get me wrong the stuff is super sweet and I applaud the talented musicians who pull these solos off. I'm just saying while all that is super cool and impressive I prefer something slower, something with a killer rhythm and beat, and of course a song with the incredibly powerful lyrics that almost bring you to tears even after you have heard the song  five-thousand times is even better. I prefer a song like Bittersweet Symphony, it has all of those things and so much more. It's a song that helped me when I was down, not sure why because its kind of depressing, but aren't most great songs kind of terribly sad or depressing? At least all the one I like are, maybe that's just me. The point is if you haven't listened to this amazingly, awesome, spectacular, killer song, first off you have been living under a rock for 10 years and second off you are crazyyyy! Do it now!!!!!

For me this song personally means a lot. Although it didn't come out when my parents were getting divorced, it still helped me a lot during this difficult time. That sounds weird I know, you are thinking bro this is a super depressing song to listen to again during that time, but I don't know at the time I didn't see it that way, I saw it has an uplifting kind of song. Don't ask me why because I go back now and realize how truly depressing it is but I mean maybe it helped me because I'm sorry to say it but It is the ugly truth. With lines like " you're a slave to money than you die." you know that sounds awful but think about it, I mean that is very true. Money often takes over people's lives, sucking them in, making them think that is the only way they can be happy. I know from experience that money is not the only thing you need to be happy, though it does help. Point is this a killer, well-written, and beautifully performed song that helped me a lot when going through a tough time and it could do the same for you, so check it out.

High School Never Ends, Bowling for Soup

The title of this sweet song with a simply catchy rhythm is pretty self explanatory. High School Never ends is by a somewhat well known band called Bowling for Soup. The band somehow perfectly describes that terrible experience of high school and how it never seems to end, no matter how old you are. Some disagree with the words of the song while others like me completely agree and are sad to admit that high school does in fact never end. I mean think about it you grow up, you graduate you go to college which is basically high school with more alcohol and sex and less bullies, but still as many assholes. After that you go out and get a "real job" and at this real job it still seem to matter who you are friends with, what kind of car you drive, and whose having sex. All of these thing being lines taken directly from the song and all stand to be true at least in the cases I have experienced. Some people love the fact that high school never seems to end in some sense at least. Others like me dread this because let's face it high school blows.
"Reese Witherspoon,
 She’s the prom queen
 Bill Gates,
 Captain of the chess team
 Jack Black, the clown
 Brad Pitt, the quarterback
 I’ve seen it all before
 I want my money back"
these lyrics happen to stand out the most to me because let's face it all of those things are probably true. Me to this is just yet another way to show that high school does in fact, sadly, never end. Now I am not saying that just because you were a loser in high school means that what you will be the rest of your life. I mean look at Bill Gates, I bet he didn't have all the ladies and a cool car, but he sure does now. Now he has more money then he knows what to do with. I want to have that kind of life after high school, let's be honest.
I am not going to be one of those who comes back after high school and brags about how perfect their life is now and how much money they make. I won't gloat or brag, ok maybe I will brag a a little :) but as far as tho killer song goes it is almost always true and is definitely one of my favorite throwbacks to early 2000's and like I said super fun to play on the guitar! Listen to it now if you haven't yet!

Damn, Jamie Lynn...

Damn, Jamie Lynn...

Earlier this week sister of pop star princess, Britney Spears, Jamie Lynn showed what she's got by breaking up a fight before grabbing some grub at a Pita Pit in LA. If you have the time I suggest you go check out this beautiful security camera piece of art of Jamie Lynn running behind the counter to grab a rather large knife for a tiny lady, and proceed to break up the fight. TMZ released the video, and I'll say it again, go check it out, it's beyond worth it.

Now, here's what's sort of running through my head when I watch this video... Jamie, my dear girl, what the hell are you thinking?? You are a mother for heavens sake, you can't be jumping into a fight with a knife, it's too dangerous. What if your knife came face to face with someones gun. Who's going to win that battle? Let me give you a hint... Not you, Jamie. And even though you're not as famous as your sister, that doesn't mean that's going to stop them from hurting you. Fame or fortune doesn't matter when it comes to people who are out to hurt others.

So, here's my question to you blogger world... did Jamie Lynn, tiny, young blonde, do the right thing by jumping in the break up this fight? Or was it pure stupidity when she has a young child at home to take care of? Here's what I think, stay out of it. You have a child, they need you, don't put yourself in harms way unless it is threatening the life of your child. Then, pull a knife, gun, whatever to protect your child, but just stand back when it comes to fights you have nothing to do with. I can guarantee you if the person I am with now heard I jumped in on a fight with a knife, and we had a child, she would be downright pissed. Then again, my lady is quite the protector. But still, I'm not sure I would jump in. Now, if I didn't have a child, maybe I would try to break it up, but even then, I would fear a little for my life. Maybe calling the police would be a better choice. Or maybe she did the right thing here, maybe too many of us stand back and don't do anything which leads to murders, raping, and other horrible situations.

So, either way, right or wrong, Ms. Jamie Lynn, I'm impressed by you, I think you're stupid, but impressed that you weren't afraid to get a little dirty and jump in to help someone out. Next time though, just be a little more careful.

Christmas Music in November

Christmas Music in November

Okay, let's get a few things straight here (not me, obviously... Hope I made you chuckle there) Christmas is in December, NOT November. So, riddle me this blogger world, why is it when I flip through radio stations on my way to school I hear the piercing sound of Christmas music pumping through my speakers? Now, I would understand if people were all about early Christmas music, but I have never once heard someone say, "I wish they would start playing their holiday music just a little sooner." So what the hell KDAT?!? That's right, I'm calling you out specifically.
Don't get me wrong, KDAT has gotten better. One year, they started playing it the beginning of November and well, the learned their lesson on that one, but let's keep learning, okay. No one wants to hear it 24/7, period.
Now, you may be wondering why I'm so angry. "Maddy, there are other stations you can listen to." And you're right, there are. But, I also like to get my fix of Pat Bennitar and the occasional Dixy Chicks song. Judge me, I dare you.
I simply get tired if Christmas being a holiday that pretty much starts in October now. I mean, how long until we say screw it and make it year round? I give that idea about 5 years. So, remember to refer to this blog in about five years.
Maybe I'm a grinch or maybe I have common sense and an ear for decent music, but whichever it may be, chill out with the Christmas music already. And that goes for retail stores too. Enough is enough. I don't need jingle bells blasting through the store while I'm picking up eggs.
Merry Christmas, and remember, we can love the holidays without Christmas music in November.

Stacey's Mom, Fountaians of Wayne

Everyone can hear the song "Stacey's Mom" come on and immediately start singing along. Whether or not they agree with the lyrics is a little different. The words can come off a little inappropriate, with lyrics like "But since your dad walked out, your mom could use a guy like me" many did not approve of what the song was saying. Many would consider it a little inappropriate for a teenage boy to be in love with a middle-aged women, but in my opinion to each his own. If the writer of the song or the kid the songwriter is talking about is really in love with this woman than so be it. love is love. you don't chose who you fall in love with, I mean this kid probably wishes he loved someone his own age. Plus chances are that this classy woman isn't going to give him the time of day anyway.

Now enough about the meaning of the song, lets talk about the crazy sweet rhythms and of course that killer hook that has you singing this inappropriate early 2000's all day long. The guitar in the song in super simply, besides of course the mid song guitar solo which is full of riffs and are kinds of sick cords. Other than that the guitar is super simply and is actually one of the first songs I learned to play on the guitar, consisting of mainly A, B, and E chords. these being some of the most simply, makes this a fun and exciting first song to  learn.

The tune of the song is catchy and if I may say so myself incredibly dancy. Teens across the country were screaming the lyrics to this song in the early 2000's, and now these those teens who are now adults still feel the excitement of being at a middle school dance whenever the infamous song begins.

Fountains of Wayne were a short lived popular band, with having one major hit. They paved the way though for many of the pop/punk/rock bands of that era. More bands were beginning to take on that teenage, lovesick sound making it skyrocket on the charts. Today, many of these bands are in their 40's raising families and sometimes reuniting with their former band mates to relive their good ol' days.

As for me, I'm sure Stacy's mom did have it going on, and I probably would have been singing the same song as these guys of this woman really looked and acted as she did. Stacy's mom... Such a tease... I'm still waiting on Stacy's mom.

Take Me to Church, Hozier

Take me to Church by Hozier is not just crazy good song with a great rhythm and variety. It is a song that tells a painful sad but well written story. When first listening to the song, the lyrics are rather confusing. Singer and songwriter wrote the beautiful piece it was clear he wanted the message to be something you had to think about. A song you had to search for the meaning of. The song contains and large amount of symbolism and imagery. The lyric "Drain the Whole Sea, get something shiny, something meaty for the main course, that a fine looking high horse." stands out to me because obliviously he isn't really referencing  to sea or fine horses, the meaning is deeper. To me the sea represents draining everything that you are for the person you love giving them that "something shiny" (your love) but also "something meaty" (day to day love for them). The song has such a deeper meaning then  just the words sung by the amazing Hozier himself.

Intense. If you have seen the music video to this amazing so g you know what I'm talking about when I say intense. And if you haven't seen it, I suggest you check it out because it has a great message with an ending that will keep your jaw dropped for at least a few seconds. Here's a link to it if you are interested.
http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=MYSVMgRr6pw
To sum it but it is basically the story of two gay men who get caught being together by the leader of some kind of cult against gays. Being gay myself this video hit home and made me incredibly sad. Sad because I know that stuff like this does happen. I know that no matter how far our society comes, there will also be those people ripping us down, trying to take us back to the dark ages. The video is moving and equally as spectacle as the song itself. You are have not check out either make sure you do so as soon as possibly can. Get those little thumbs typing and spread the message this amazing song relays to you. Spread it to all those close minded people and show them that love is LOVE and that the only thing keeping them from realizing that is fear. Fear of someone who isn't exactly like you. Teach those fearful people that no matter your age, gender,  or ethnicity, it's all the same love. Spread the word.
